Strategic Advisor

A unique opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled professional with experience in Chinese corporate decision-making processes and culture, together with a comprehensive understanding of the global business environment (in particular as it relates to China and Victoria, Australia), to join the Victorian Government Trade & Investment (VGTI) network.


Reporting directly to the Commissioner for Victoria to Greater China, the successful applicant will provide executive-level strategic advice and support to a geographically diverse workforce, with five offices in Greater China. You will work across China and with colleagues in Melbourne to support the Commissioner in achieving strong economic results for Victoria.

Successful Candidate

The successful candidate will possess:


1, Experience in providing strategic advice in the areas of government engagement, trade facilitation and/or investment attraction within a geographically diverse business environment.


2, Proven ability to manage complex and sensitive issues and provide strategic advice and solutions under tight timeframes.


3, Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to establish and manage cross functional relationships with key stakeholders.


4, Sound understanding of the statutory and regulatory environment in Greater China, particularly as it relates to the operation of a foreign representative office.


The successful candidate for this locally engaged position will be responsible for all arrangements in relation to visa and relocation expenses (if applicable), their accommodation and day-to-day living expenses.

Selection Criteria

1, Demonstrated experience in the provision of strategic advice in the areas of government engagement, trade facilitation and/or investment attraction within a geographically diverse business environment.


2, Experience in managing complex and sensitive issues and the provision of considered, strategic advice and solutions, often within short timeframes.


3, Highly developed consultation and negotiation skills, resulting in the establishment and maintenance of cross-functional partnerships.


4, Knowledge of contemporary trends and developments, including legislation, economic climate and funding initiatives, in an environment subject to rapid change and development.


5, Comprehensive understanding of the statutory and regulatory environment in Greater China, as it relates to the operation of a foreign representative office.


6, Strong interpersonal and written communication skills in both English and Mandarin Chinese are essential in the development of effective relationships at senior levels.


7, Ability to provide effective support to staff in remote locations.
