News from Beijing...

On March 27, the ACAA together with members and guests made a stand on climate change by celebrating Earth Hour. Part of a global effort to call attention to the issue of climate change, the Beijing ACAA Earth Hour was held in a cosy hutong tucked away in Naluoguxiang.

Switching all lights off and surrounded by candles, guests joined us for an eco-friendly evening, mingling and making new friends. With the lights off, a ‘Be Bright’ quiz was held. Most guests were first timers at Earth Hour and look forward to similar upcoming events.

ACAA Beijing also took part in the 3rd Expat Show – the biggest gathering of the foreign community, showcasing information, services and products one might need for a new life in Beijing. It was a great opportunity for us to promote the work we do and recruit new members. Once again, we thank all our volunteers for their time and support.

Designs on Hong Kong

Queensland College of Art has expanded internationally, with the opening of a new off-shore program in Bachelor of Design at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The course has begun with a full compliment of 30 students who over two semesters will "top up" their existing qualifications and graduate with a completed Bachelor Degree from Griffith University.

On hand to welcome the new intake in Hong Kong was QCA Director, Professor Paul Cleveland who said he was very excited by the spirit of cooperation being forged between Chinese University of Hong Kong and Griffith University.

"It's been two years in the planning and was a big risk taking venture, but the chance to team up with Chinese University has been a golden opportunity for us," said Professor Cleveland.

"This is a story of two extremely strong brands joining forces and I am confident we will become a formidable force for delivering high quality education in the Asia-Pacific region.

"We are very impressed with the quality, ability and diligence shown by our new intake of students and look forward to presenting our first cohort of design graduates plus welcome a brand new intake of young designers in September this year.

"I had the pleasure of talking with the students who expressed their pleasure at undertaking a degree that would give them a leading edge having qualifications from Griffith.

"Without room to expand our physical premises at South Bank, Hong Kong presents us with another way of being able to grow our campus, and build our international reputation."

It is the QCA's excellent reputation internationally for having such strong and sought after Degree courses that initially led to the invitation to open in Hong Kong.

The first of the intensive class sessions is being led by Steve Mathews lecturing in Visual Communication Design.

QCA's Design Department Senior Lecturer, Donald Welch is the convenor of the off-shore program and has reported that the program is having a very positive response from the students and that now the Bachelor of Design is fully underway in Hong Kong.

Reconnecting Alumni – ACAA and AusAid collaborate to reconnect scholars

In 2009, the ACAA signed an agreement to partner with AusAid on a new project to reconnect with over 800 Chinese students who have studied in Australia since the 1980s on AusAid-funded postgraduate scholarships.  Many recipients were from the Chinese public service and have since successfully moved into senior positions in the government. Many others have gone on to excel in the private sector.

This project is an effort to reconnect with these scholars and to understand and learn more about how their Australian education and experiences has helped their professional development. It is hoped that in the long term, this alumni group of scholars will become a platform for exchange of ideas, knowledge and expertise between Australia and China.

To date, ACAA has successfully tracked down over 100 alumni, many of whom are holding senior positions in the public and private sector. Many of these alumni have expressed support to the project and look forward to play an active role in strengthening Australia China bilateral relations.

The Year of Australian Culture in China

The Australian Embassy in Beijing is gearing up to present a “Year of Australian Culture” from June 2010 – June 2011, to showcase Australian culture to Chinese audiences. Coming under the banner Imagine Australia, it will feature some of Australia’s finest gems in the performing and visual arts, music, dance, literature, fashion, screen and food and wine sectors.

As a testament to the positive Australia-China relationship, there will be a reciprocal year of Chinese culture in Australia the following year.

Major projects include a large-scale exhibition of Aboriginal Western Desert art at the National Art Museum of China; a Peking-Western fusion opera called Passion, a Film Forum for industry leaders, several innovative visual art exhibitions, and digital and new media events which will engage the public and Chinese youth.

Many of the year’s activities have a strong collaborative emphasis, as well as a focus on regional engagement including the Song Company in Tianjin, an RMIT Sound and Space exhibition in Suzhou, a Cultural Infusion performance exchange project in Chengdu, Australian Writers Week across three Chinese cities and the Australian Youth Orchestra in Beijing and Shanghai.

The Imagine Australia website will launch in early May: www.imagineaustralia.com Many events will be free and held in public spaces and we encourage all ACAA members to get involved in our diverse program!
