Mr. Zhu (Joe) Li - President of EIC Group Ltd.

Mr. Zhu (Joe) Li - President of EIC Group Ltd.

Finalist: Austrade Australia China Alumni Award for Entrepreneurship

University of Tasmania Alumnus
Guangzhou Based

Mr. Joe Li is CEO and President of the EIC Group, one of China’s largest student recruitment agencies for universities abroad. A graduate of the Qinghua University Faculty of Architecture, in 1993 Joe received a full Australian Government Scholarship to study a Masters Degree at the University of Tasmania, an experience Joe describes as ‘extraordinary’

As early as 1992 Joe became involved with international education participating in establishing the State owned Guangzhou Overseas Study Service Centre and he worked at the centre from 1997-2000 as Chief Consultant and then Deputy Director.

In 2000, Joe established the EIC group in Guangzhou. He also personally visited most major Australian universities to pitch for EIC representation.

Under Joe’s leadership, the EIC group has grown from 10 staff in a single office to an operation employing 1200 staff across 20 locations in Australia and China. In 2010, the EIC group sent 4,200 new students from China to Australia and its Sydney Office supported another 1,950 applications from students within Australia for further studies at Australian institutions. In total EIC recruited some 6,160 students for its Australian partners, by far the largest of any agency in China. Globally the EIC group recruited 19,050 students, with Australia continuing to be the single largest destination market.

Joe has been a pioneer in the student recruitment agency industry and one of the prime players moving the industry from boutique single city operations (many state owned) to large, national, privately owned and operated networks. This has enabled Australian universities to focus their recruitment efforts on a smaller number of more capable agency partners. In the global context, academic student recruitment agencies of major size and scale running multiple offices are rare and there were few international examples to follow.

Joe notes that with average fees of A$20,000, Australian partners generated A$122 million in revenue from the 6,100 new students EIC sent last year and far, far more from previous EIC student re-enrolling for courses. With students enrolling in single courses that last as long as 4 years, then moving on to higher degrees, Joe roughly estimates that Australian partners would receive as much as A$500 million a year in tuition revenue from students originally recruited by the EIC group.
