UNIVERSITY of NEWCASTLE CHAMBER CHOIR – CHINA CONCERT TOUR, JULY 2010

In July, the University of Newcastle's prize-winning Chamber Choir will be heading to the People’s Republic of China to compete in the World Choir Games, dubbed the “Olympics of Choral Singing”.  The Games will take place in Shaoxing from 14th - 20th July and will attract many thousands of singers and choirs from across the world.

As well as participating in the World Choir Games, the choir will be giving concerts in Beijing (in conjunction with Beijing Institute of Technology), Wuhan (with the Huazhong Normal University) and Shanghai (with the choir from the East China University of Science and Technology).

Our Chamber Choir, under their Director Dr Philip Matthias, is looking to build on their 2008 success, when they shot to prominence across Australia in winning the Channel 7 “Battle of the Choirs” and, as part of their prize, released the CD “Battle Cry”.

Apart from the Choir’s success, Philip has also been recognised with a number of major awards, including the 2008 Newton John Award, an Australian Leaning and Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in 2008, anda 2009 Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence and Learning Support.

The Choir will be in China from 5 to 24 July, starting in Beijing and ending its tour in Shanghai.  We would love to see Alumni members at our concerts.  For more details of the tour, including concert dates and venues, visit the Choir’s website [www.newcastle.edu.au/chamberchoir ].

Details will also be included on our Facebook site - search for “University of Newcastle Chamber Choir”.
