ACAA Christmas parties a hit right across China
Australia China Alumni Association celebrated Christmas at three great and diverse events across China.

Beijing 12 December
Around 90 alumni gathered at stylish Scarlett Bar in Beijing, complete with Santa Hats, to enjoy ACAA Beijing's third Christmas party. Amongst the guests was Arts and Culture Award winner Qiao Luqiang as well as guests from partner universities and the Embassy. We were also lucky to have Australian university alumni Brooke Avory (Changhai Children's Project) and Kent Fung (Dandelion Migrant Children's School) at the event selling Christmas cards and gifts to raise money for their NGOs, which both do important work educating Chinese children.

Shanghai 5 December
Over 100 alumni in Shanghai celebrated Christmas sky-high at the 65th floor 789 Bar in Le Meridien. Special guest Santa Claus (above) gave out free coupons from Subway, Boost Juice, Gloria Jeans and Carrefour and Young Alumni of the Year Martyn Huckerby gave a welcome speech.

Guangzhou 13 December
The ACAA's first South China Christmas party was a great event hosted jointly with AustCham South China. Alumni were treated to a buffet dinner in an Australian-themed restaurant, and enjoyed live music and plenty of Christmas cheer. Australian Consul-General to South China Sean Kelly attended and gave a short speech.

Australian Expo Pavilion 2010: Sneak preview just for ACAA!

The ACAA is thrilled to announce that on February 27th, 2010, we will be arranging a special, pre-expo tour of the Australian pavilion at Shanghai World Expo 2010. Alumni will have the opportunity to travel to the Expo site in an ACAA bus, where Australian pavilion director Peter Sams will offer alumni a private tour of the Australian pavilion. We’ll also have the opportunity to drive around the larger expo site, and see the progress of other nations, including China and America.

Places on the tour are strictly limited, and ACAA paid-up members will receive priority. See our website for more info or to RSVP.

The Australian pavilion (right) continues to be one of the most advanced pavilions,  enthusiastic support from Australian governments, businesses and universities, including ACAA silver partner The University of Sydney, and ACAA Alumni Awards sponsor ANZ Bank.

Australia China Alumni Awards videos online

It was Australian education's night of nights in Beijing on Saturday 7th November as the ACAA presented eight awards to outstanding alumni of Australian universities at the inaugural ACAA/CPA Australia - Australia China Alumni Awards

A highlight of the evening for all present were the touching and interesting acceptance speeches from the winners, which really demonstrated the impact that Australian university education can have on people's careers and lives. The acceptance speeches are now available to view on our website: Alumni Awards acceptance videos

The inaugural awards attracted an impressive range and volume of press coverage, with over 40 articles published online and in print between July and December this year.

The Alumni Awards promise to be even bigger and better in 2010, with events planned at the Australian Pavilion at Shanghai Expo and much much more. Stay tuned to our newsletters and updates for more details on 2010 nomination criteria and deadlines.

Renowned Australian Choreographer partners with Shanghai Ballet for Christmas Eve premiere in Shanghai

It will be a very special Christmas eve indeed for Chinese and Australian ballet fans in Shanghai with the world premiere of new ballet 'Water' by Australian Choreographer Graeme Murphy commissioned by Shanghai Ballet. China’s Employment Activity Market On the Rise Again

Contributed by Larry Wang, Wang and Li Asia Resources

After a tougher than normal business year for many of our clients here in China from the global financial crisis, fortunately, we are definitely seeing hiring activity pick up again in the market.  Although we would not claim that it is back to pre-financial crisis levels, it’s starting to look good once again.

“I’m an engineer by training, so I like using numbers to describe situations.  For instance, on a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 stands for extremely high and 1 means not active at all, I would describe the hiring market activity in China before the financial crisis, from roughly 2004 to mid-2008, is at about an 8.5 or 9 out of 10,” describes Wang & Li Asia Resources’ CEO and Founder, Larry Wang.  “In other words, it was definitely a boom time as far as searching for and identifying good job opportunities is concerned.”

“Starting from early 4th quarter of 2008, however, the impact of global financial crisis dropped that level of hiring activity to about a 2 or 3 out of 10, as most global companies implemented world-wide hiring freezes, headcount freezes, and budget cuts.  We saw that situation continue throughout the first half of 2009.”

“Beginning around July though, we’ve seen hiring activity return for many of our global clients here in China, as they’ve lifted their budget and headcount freezes for this market.  At this time, I would rate employment market activity in China at about a 7 or 7.5.  That’s really not bad at all considering the very difficult and uncertain employment scenarios being faced by all other major economies worldwide.  So whatever concerns or fears about China’s job market you may have, you should just keep in mind that the situation here and prospects for good opportunities is far better than any place else in the world.”

Hello from ACAA!

What a year! As we here at ACAA reflect on our biggest year yet we're reminded of some of our achievements - including launching in Guangzhou, holding the very successful inaugural Australia China Alumni Awards, and launching an improved and expanded website.

We're also very pleased to announced that Macquarie University in Sydney has joined as a silver partner, taking us to 21 universities or over half of Australia's universities.

None of this would have been possible without the ongoing and generous support and encouragement we receive from our alumni members and other supporters, so we take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us. Whether you're a major sponsor, or an event attendee, you're helping to build and grow the ACAA into a vital and relevant organisation for the future.

We also farewell ACAA Communications Manager Amanda Barry, who after 18 months (12 months as an AusAID Youth Ambassador) is moving on from ACAA. Good luck for the future Amanda!

As always, we thank you for your support - Merry Christmas and best wishes for a safe and happy 2010 for you and your family!

Best wishes from

The ACAA team
Edward, Amanda, Sarah, Jason, Jessica and Rona.
