Australia China Alumni Association and CPA Australia
Australia China Alumni Awards 2010

Three winners: Peter Pang, Wang Yijia and
Han Feng

It was the biggest night of the year for China-based alumni of Australian universities on Saturday 10 July 2010, as 280 alumni and friends gathered to celebrate the Australia China Alumni Association and CPA Australia - Australia China Alumni Awards at Le Meridien Hotel, Shanghai.

Nine awards were presented at the Gala Presentation Dinner to high achieving Australian-educated alumni in China with Peter Pang, President of Bosch China and alumnus of the University of Western Australia, taking top honours as the 2010 Australia China Alumni of the Year.

Martyn Huckerby, one of this year's judges and Partner and Chief Representative at the Mallesons Stephen Jaques Shanghai Office, commented on Peter Pang's win: "Peter has achieved great things since graduating from the University of Western Australia with a degree in electronics engineering. The recognition of Peter's achievements should provide further encouragement for Chinese students to advance their careers and life experience by studying in Australia."

The ACAA would like to thank the Award judges, winners, finalists and all nominees for taking part in the Awards. We also thank our university partners for their ongoing support.

2010 Australia China Alumni Lifetime Achievement
Award Winners

A special, honourary award was presented for the first time at the 2010 Australia China Alumni Awards. The 2010 Australia China Alumni Lifetime Achievement Award was presented at the discretion of the Australia China Alumni Association to a group of alumni who, over many years, have made a significant contribution to the Australia-China relationship.

Every year many thousands of Chinese students make the journey to Australia to begin their studies at one of our fine tertiary institutions. This journey of thousands started with a small group of nine Chinese students, who in 1979, became the first group of Chinese students to travel to Australia for study. The members of this group are:
  • Emeritus Professor Du Ruiqing (杜瑞清), Xi’an Foreign Studies University
  • Emeritus Professor Hou Weirui (侯维瑞), Shanghai International Studies University
  • Emeritus Professor Hu Wenzhong (胡文仲), Beijing Foreign Studies University
  • Emeritus Professor Hu Zhuanglin (胡壮麟), Peking University
  • Emeritus Professor Huang Yuanshen (黄源深), East China Normal University
  • Emeritus Professor Long Rijin (龙日金), Sichuan Foreign Languages University
  • Emeritus Professor Qian Jiaoru (钱佼汝), Nanjing University
  • Emeritus Professor Wang Guofu (王国富), Suzhou University
  • Emeritus Professor Yang Chaoguang (杨潮光), the University of International Business and Economics Beijing
Upon their graduation from the University of Sydney and their return to China, the Group of Nine continued their connection with Australia by establishing Australian Studies Centres in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Xi’an and Nanjing. Since 1979 many thousands of Chinese students have followed in the footsteps of this original Group of Nine and there are now 26 Australian Studies Centres across China.

Six of the nine Group of Nine members attended the Gala Presentation Dinner to accept their Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented by Mr Tom Connor, Australian Consul-General to Shanghai, and Dr Geoff Raby, Australian Ambassador to China.
